Starting A Photography Business - What To Consider by Bobby Jones

What is the best way to start a photography business? The answer to this question depends at least partly on what type of photography you would like your business to focus on.

There is nothing more distracting to achievement of your goals than jumping constantly from one specialist area to another; you never quite make it at anything! So please take some time to consider which areas you want to specialise in, this will save you lots of time and energy in the long run in your attempt to build a successful photography business.

Your aim should be to become competent in approximately 2 or 3 areas of photography. You can choose between commercial photography, portraiture, wedding photography, pet photography, group photography, baby photography and many more. You will also benefit from having a sound business plan with some short-term goal is medium term and long term.

The main distinctions between the different areas are the pressures you are under to produce the level of skill needed to please the customer. For example wedding photography will require working under a lot of pressure with people to produce the goods in a few hours, whereas commercial photography may give you a few days, say working with equipment rather than people.

So for wedding photography one of the first things you must decide is if you have the people skills that are required to work successfully with both individuals and large groups, taking control and giving direction assertively in order to achieve a well polished job.

You need also to discover your style of photography; this applies mainly in wedding and portraiture photography. Will it be reportage, will it be candid, will it be formal or informal or will it be a bit of both.

Once you have decided which areas to specialise in, and have at least an elementary business plan, you should start to look around and see what the competition are doing. This will help you gauge your place in the market. For example, what are other photographers charging, what is the size of the market, what equipment would you need, do you have the experience, if not where and how could you learn?

For example wedding photography is an area where I would advise that you steer clear from until you have the confidence, the technical expertise, posing and people skills required to achieve a high standard product. If your ambition is to eventually become a wedding photographer, I would advise you to start with group photography.

One of the best ways to learn wedding photography is to work with a professional photographer; another is to attend a wedding photography seminar or course.

Other areas of photography allow you to become conversant with lighting and exposure techniques before you decide to tackle weddings. So perhaps group, or pet photography is best for you to start with.

To build a successful photography business it is crucial to learn both how to find and how to keep customers. This is essentially a key factor between success and failure, especially in the early years of your business growth. For example if you are asked to shoot a christening for a family and make an excellent job of it, the chances are you will be asked by to photograph birthday parties and other special occasions including weddings.

So if you are starting a photography business or any other business for that matter, please keep in mind that this is by far the best way to get customers, that is through word-of-mouth recommendation.
